Judo Competition & The Olympics


The first Judo Competition was very different to how we know and understand it today. Only one score was valid, and the contest was fought until one of the Judoka scored, this was a 1 point score IPPON. Some time later a half point score was added WAZARI.

The British Judo Association (BJA) was formed in 1948, and is the National Governing Body for Judo in the U.K. and the Channel Islands.

1964 Judo was first included in the Olympic Games as a Recognised Sport for Men only at the Tokyo Games

1988 Judo became a Recognised Paralympic Sport for Men only at the Seoul South Korea Paralympic Games

1992 Judo became a Recognised Olympic and Paralympic Sport for Women at the Barcelona Spain Olympic & Paralympic Games.

It would be another 11 years before Judo became a Recognised sport for Special Olympics, for both Male and Female Judoka. At the 2003 Special Olympic World Summer Games in Dublin Ireland.
